Alberto Ledesma
PROF. ALBERTO LEDESMA
UPC
Prof. Alberto Ledesma is a geotechnical expert with more than 20 years of experience in both fields education and consulting. He has been involved in several research projects of large landslides, radioactive waste disposals and tunnels & underground constructions. He was deeply involved in the design and construction of the Spanish High Speed Railway Lines (AVE).

His main research lines include: numerical analysis of geotechnical problems, behaviour of partially saturated soils, cracking in soils, field instrumentation in tunnelling works, soil parameters identification by backanalysis and nonlinear elastic models for highly small strain conditions. The last two topics were found to be very important in tunnelling in urban areas, where settlements are usually small and calibration of soil models becomes difficult.

He is the author of more than 150 scientific papers, and reviewer of several journals such as Géotecnique, International Journal of Numerical & Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, Computers & Geotechnics, Water Resources Research, Engineering Geology and the Italian Journal di Geotechnica.
Eduardo Alonso
PROF. EDUARDO ALONSO
UPC
Prof. Eduardo Alonso has been involved in more than one hundred consulting jobs in Spain and abroad involving deep excavations, nuclear power stations, diaphragm walls, ground improvement techniques, design of shallow and deep foundations, slope stability, underpinning of structures, site investigation reports, breakwaters, concrete and earth dams, tunnels, underground nuclear storage.

His main research topics have been in the fields of reliability and risk in geotechnical engineering; behaviour of partially saturated soils; expansive soils and rocks; numerical analysis of geotechnical problems (soils and rocks); field measurements and geotechnical backnalysis; slope stability and earth and rockfill dams.

He is the author or co-author of more than 300 scientific papers published in national and international symposia, specialized research books and leading journals. In 1994 and 2006 he was awarded the Telford Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK), in 1995 the Jose Torán Prize by the Comité Español de Grandes Presas (Spanish Committee of Dams), in 2000 the Narcís Monturiol Medal by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia), in 2006 the Crampton Prize by the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK) and in 2009 the Geotechnical Research Medal by the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK). In 1995 he was made a member of the Real Academia of Engineering of Spain and in 2006 he was also made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of Barcelona.
